Fungal nail infection is a nightmare for anyone, due to its pain, appearance and smell most people try many medical treatments with minimal benefit. Laser treatments nowadays become the treatment of choice because of its effectiveness with no side effects.
What Is Onychomycosis, Causes
Onychomycosis is a fungal infection of the nail. It is the most common disease of the nails. This condition may affect toenails or fingernails, but toenail are particularly common. The symptoms of a fungal nail are the nail becoming thickened and discolored: white, yellow, black or green. As the infection progresses the nail can become brittle, with pieces breaking off or coming away from the toe or finger completely. If left untreated, the skin can become inflamed and painful underneath and around the nail. People with onychomycosis may experience significant psychological problems due to the appearance of the nail that is visible. Aging is the most common risk factor for onychomycosis due to diminished blood circulation, longer exposure to fungi, nails that grow more slowly and thicken, increasing susceptibility to infection. The nail fungus tend to affect more men than women and it is associated with a family history of this infection. Other risk infections include perspiring heavily, being in a humid moist environment, psoriasis, wearing socks and shoes that hinder ventilation and do not absorb perspiration, going barefoot in damp public places such as swimming pools, gyms and shower rooms, having athelet’s foot ( tinea pedis), minor skin and nail injury, damaged nail, having diabetes, circulation problems or a weakened immune system. To avoid misdiagnosis, a laboratory confirmation may be necessary and involves a microscopic examination and culture of nail scrapings and clippings. In approximately half of suspected nail infections are actually nail deformities, therefor a confirmation of fungal infection is needed.
How Does Laser Work
Fungal nail infections affect a huge number of people, given its widespread nature, there is little awareness of the disease and treatment options. There are various treatment options which include: topical anti-fungal treatments applied over many months. These have a very low successful rate are time consuming and the nail unit is relatively impenetrable; powerful prescription anti-fungal drugs taken over a period of months, these are effective but there are possible unwanted side effects and can be contra-indicated with certain conditions or medication. Infected nails can be surgically removed in extreme cases. Fotona Xp Dynamis Laser is a revolutionary patient friendly method for treating onychomycosis. It is a simple and extremely effective procedure that uses the power of Nd-Yag laser light to heat evenly throughout the depth of the affected nail and skin tissue, weakening and killing parasitic fungi which have infected the patients nails. Deep, pulse- profile heating of the nail bed stimulates the killing of parisitic fungus. The natural growth and immune processes of the body are then able to restore the nail to its pristine state. Compared to traditional methods, the effects of laser light spread evenly thoughout the tissue and are not subject to either the limits of chemical diffusion ( as are topicals) or the introduction of hepatoxic side effects ( case of oral medications).
What To Expect
For the Laser treatment the nail is prepared to ensure a successful, even heat delivery. The nail is filed down, onychomycosis causes deformed and thickened nails, so filling down the nail allows laser light to fully penetrate into the treatment site. The Laser light is then applied to the entire nail, perimeter of the nail bed and around the finger or toe. Often parasitic fungus have worked its way beyond the nail bed needs to be eliminated in all the tissue surrounding the nail to prevent recurrence. All nails should be treated during every treatment; laser light can also effectively treat fungus which has infected skin tissue. Client should feel a slight heating sensation. The treatment is performed 4 times, a week apart and all nails are treated 3 times per session. Treatment takes approximately 30 minutes.
